Why Low-Alcohol and Non-Alcoholic Wine Are Trending Right Now

Over the past few years, one of the most striking transformations in the wine world hasn’t come from the vineyards of Bordeaux or the cellars of Napa. But from a growing movement away from alcohol altogether. The rise of non-alcoholic wine and low-alcohol wines (often called “NoLo” wines) is shaking up industry norms.

According to recent industry insights, including those from Sommelier Business and The Drinks Business, global sales of NoLo wines grew by 31% in the last year alone. That’s not just a passing trend—it’s a seismic shift in how consumers think about wine.

Why Are Drinkers Turning to ‘NoLo’ aka Non-Alcoholic Wine & Wines With Low ABV %?

The reasons are as nuanced as a finely aged Pinot Noir. First, the wellness movement has taken a firm grip on lifestyle choices across generations—but especially among Millennials and Gen Z. Younger drinkers are prioritizing moderation, mental health, and overall well-being. For many, that means reducing alcohol intake or cutting it out altogether.

Second, the stigma once associated with choosing a non-alcoholic option is fading. No longer are these wines seen as “less than.” In fact, the newest generation of NoLo wines are complex, thoughtfully crafted, and often nearly indistinguishable from their full-strength counterparts.

As Sommelier Business reports in their 2025 outlook, “It’s not about avoiding alcohol—it’s about expanding choice.” This sentiment is echoed across tasting rooms and restaurants, where having a non-alcoholic wine list is quickly becoming the norm rather than the exception.

How Wineries Are Innovating

The early iterations of non-alcoholic wines often lacked the depth and complexity that wine lovers expect. But advancements in dealcoholization technology have changed the game. Today, producers can gently remove alcohol while preserving the wine’s core flavors and aromas.

One technique involves vacuum distillation at low temperatures, which minimizes flavor loss. Another method, reverse osmosis, filters out the alcohol while retaining the essential components of the wine. Both allow winemakers to craft bottles that remain true to their original profiles.

Big names are taking note. Brands like Pierre Chavin, Casillero del Diablo, Giesen, and even Duckhorn have begun offering low- or non-alcoholic wine alternatives. These aren’t novelty items—they’re serious wines meant for food pairings, celebrations, and quiet evenings alike.

What Does a Good NoLo Wine Taste Like?

Expect freshness, crispness, and surprising depth. While red wines have traditionally been harder to mimic due to their tannic structure. New blends and barrel-aging techniques are bringing more balance to non-alcoholic reds.

Whites and rosés, however, shine in this category. Think zesty citrus, floral notes, and stone fruit—all with none of the after-effects of alcohol. Sparkling versions have become especially popular, often served at weddings, baby showers, and workplace events where alcohol is avoided.

A Cultural and Global Shift Toward Non-Alcoholic Wine

Globally, regions like Germany and Australia are leading the NoLo wine movement. With innovation coming from both major wine companies and independent producers. Europe’s stricter driving laws and health policies have also contributed to the popularity of low-alcohol options and non-alcoholic wine at social gatherings.

Interestingly, the U.S. market has been somewhat slower to adopt—but that’s changing quickly. According to The Drinks Business, the NoLo trend has found its way into the shelves pf the largest of stores including Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and even high-end wine bars in New York and San Francisco.

The Benefits of Low Alcohol & Non-Alcoholic Wine

Switching to low-ABV or non-alcoholic wines offers a range of health benefits without sacrificing the enjoyment of wine. By reducing or eliminating alcohol intake, you lower your risk of liver disease, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer. Not forgetting whilst also improving sleep quality and mental clarity. Non-alcoholic wines typically contain fewer calories, making them a great choice for those focused on weight management or overall wellness. Additionally, they allow you to stay hydrated and avoid the dehydrating effects of alcohol. For those practicing moderation or following a sober-curious lifestyle, these wines provide a socially inclusive, heart-healthy alternative that fits seamlessly into a balanced, mindful approach to drinking.

Cyprus & Non-Alcoholic Wine

While many low-ABV wines are the result of modern technology, some regions are blessed with grape varieties that naturally ferment to lower alcohol levels. One of the most exciting examples comes from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Where the indigenous white grape Spourtiko has quietly offered wine lovers a lighter alternative for generations.

Spourtiko typically produces wines with an ABV as low as 10.5%, making it ideal for those seeking moderation without losing the essence of real wine. The grape is known for its fresh acidity, floral aromas, and citrus-driven palate—perfect for warm climates and seafood pairings. It’s also incredibly food-friendly and serves as a refreshing aperitif with enough complexity to hold its own on any modern wine list.

To put this in perspective, Spourtiko’s ABV is even lower than Cyprus’ first-ever Blue Wine—produced by Linos Winery—which clocks in at 12.5% ABV. While the blue wine grabs headlines with its novelty, Spourtiko is quietly winning over sommeliers and natural wine lovers looking for authenticity and balance in their glass.

The Future of Wine Is Inclusive

At its heart, wine is about enjoyment, celebration, and connection. The rise of NoLo wines doesn’t diminish that—it enhances it. Now, everyone can participate in the ritual of opening a bottle and toasting to something meaningful, regardless of their alcohol preferences.

Whether you’re sober curious, cutting back, or just exploring new flavor profiles, non-alcoholic wine could be worth a spot on your shelf. As we continue to see innovation in this space, it’s clear that these alternatives aren’t just a phase—they’re the future of an industry that’s learning to embrace change with open arms (and full glasses).

Cheers to that!🥂

  • @alpha_estate Wine Tasting with @lamaisonduvin_cyprus at the wonderful @parklanecyprus

Alpha Estate was founded in 1997 by viticulturist Makis Mavridis and chemist-oenologist Angelos Iatridis, who chose the Amyndeon region to create their own wines.

Sandy-clay loamy soil aids the production of wines with an intense and complex aroma, excellent finesse, good structure and balance. The limestone subsoil has traces of pre-existing lakes, which reflect in the minerality of the wines too.

Alpha Estate’s vineyard consists of international and greek varieties like Xinomavro, Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tannat, Malagouzia, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer & Assyrtiko 🍇

It was with absolute pleasure to taste not only a 5 year vertical tasting of the SMX but also the new Malagouzia and an incredible sweet wine, aptly named ‘ Omega’ made from a blend of Gewürztraminer and Malagouzia 😍
